The most interesting and accomplished trumpeter working today? In my opinion, yes! He is also one of my five vanguard players of the late 20th/early 21st century (the others: Bill Frisell,John Zorn,Tim Berne and Ken Vandermark - i'm also tempted to add Steve Coleman!)...Illustrious company.
Anyway, this album is stellar! Dave has worked with electronic music before (Ikue Mori and in his group Keystone, for example) but this is probably the most integrated band. It sounds edgy,it has attitude and is drenched in risk...(there is no safety net!)...no pain,no gain.
My recommendation: buy this because contemporary music probably doesn't get any better.
A shout out for Dave's wonderful record label Greenleaf Music and their very special podcast: 'A Noise from the Deep'.
I would like the World to listen often and very carefully to Dave Douglas...
Re: the Downbeat 'controversy'...I gave up counting on the opinion of hacks years ago (they are just self-serving and,for the most part,talentless)...follow your own instincts and let the music speak for itself! The Montreal Jazz Festival set is simply superb,I think.
