Twistedsoul Renowned trumpeter Dave Douglas hooks up with Shigeto, Jonathan Maron and Mark Guiliana for a wonderful blend of old school jazz with modern production.Through their collective in-depth understanding of kaleidoscopic music and colourful textures – everything here sounds remarkably on-point. Favorite track: Cardinals.

Dillon Ethier I can assure you that if the preview tracks appeal to you in the slightest, you aren't taking much of a risk by buying. Delightfully atmospheric modern jazz here. And I know it isn't exactly groundbreaking, but I love it when small jazz ensembles incorporate a producer, putting electronic manipulation on equal footing with the "real" instruments.
John Cratchley

John Cratchley The most interesting and accomplished trumpeter working today? In my opinion, yes! He is also one of my five vanguard players of the late 20th/early 21st century (the others: Bill Frisell,John Zorn,Tim Berne and Ken Vandermark - i'm also tempted to add Steve Coleman!)...Illustrious company.
Anyway, this album is stellar! Dave has worked with electronic music before (Ikue Mori and in his group Keystone, for example) but this is probably the most integrated band. It sounds edgy,it has attitude and is drenched in risk...(there is no safety net!) pain,no gain.
My recommendation: buy this because contemporary music probably doesn't get any better.
A shout out for Dave's wonderful record label Greenleaf Music and their very special podcast: 'A Noise from the Deep'.
I would like the World to listen often and very carefully to Dave Douglas...
Re: the Downbeat 'controversy'...I gave up counting on the opinion of hacks years ago (they are just self-serving and,for the most part,talentless)...follow your own instincts and let the music speak for itself! The Montreal Jazz Festival set is simply superb,I think.

Two-time GRAMMY® nominated Dave Douglas continues his relentless musical exploration with a new record probing the possibilities of improvised jazz and electronic music. Featuring an exciting new band of noted players: Jonathan Maron (Groove Collective), on electric and acoustic bass; Mark Guiliana (Beat Music, Heernt) on electric and acoustic drums; and DJ, producer and beatmaker Shigeto (Ghostly International) on electronics.

Recorded by five-time GRAMMY® nominated Geoff Countryman (Dr. Luke, Patti LaBelle, Wu-Tang Clan, Randy Brecker, Gregory Porter, Fred Hersch) and mixed by Steve Wall (Semi Precious Weapons, Matisyahu, Meshell Ndegeocello) the album finds Douglas again walking a musical high wire. High stakes, high reward. HIGH RISK.

released June 23, 2015

Featuring Shigeto on electronics, Johnathan Maron on bass, and Mark Guiliana on drums.
